First Solo Camping Trip: A 4K Adventure in Killbear Park
Welcome to my first blog post and camping video!
After being inspired by slower, more considered outdoor hiking, camping and cooking videos, I decided to buy my first DLSR camera that would be able to capture 4K film. I spent a couple weeks researching and acquiring quality gear that would encourage me, and after feeling sufficiently prepped, I made my way to Killbear Provincial Park for the inaugural solo trip.
Setting up camp was a rewarding experience, and with a sense of excitement, I setup my Bundok Solo Base EX baker tent for the very first time. I unpacked my Yeti cooler, kitchen chest with all necessary cooking equipment and unfolded my chair. As the campsite began to take shape, I couldn't help but appreciate the tranquility and sense of calm I felt.
Luckily for me, the site was large and far from other campers. Running along the back of the tent was a small creek and further on, plenty of woods and Canadian shield landscape.
One of the essential items I brought along was the Mountain Safety Research dromedary bag, which made accessing water a breeze. It has multiple valves allowing you to pour and refill easily. The smallest valve acts as an accurate stream to fill water bottles or efficiently clean dishes.
I assembled my new Primus Kamoto fire pit, ready to put it to the test. Although opening it initially presented a bit of a challenge, I persevered and with everything in place, it was time to start a fire. The crackling sound and warmth of the flames created a cozy atmosphere that I had been longing for and is honestly one of the best parts of camping. As the fire grew, I reached for my coffee-making supplies, knowing that a hot cup of coffee would be the perfect way to unwind and savour the moment. Boiling the water over the open fire, I ending up filming the perfect moment as a raven flew across the site.
For lunch, I decided to grill some sausages, relishing in the sizzle as they cooked over the fire. I added a spicy miso dressing and a touch of mustard, a satisfying classic camping meal.
After filling my belly, I ventured out for a hike, embracing the recent rain and wind, which gave a wet, mossy smell to the air. I stumbled across a small lighthouse on the nearby lake, and some lone trees bowing to strength of the wind.
Back at the campsite, I treated myself to a Wizard Wolf pale ale from Bellwoods Brewery. Savoring its fruity, aromatic flavours, I watched the sun begin to set and I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the night (and dinner) ahead.
As the day transitioned into evening, it was time to prepare dinner. I chose to cook Korean short ribs on the grill, which had been marinating since the night before. I quickly discovered that I was cooking them too hot, reminding me to exercise patience and let the flames die down before proceeding. To accompany the ribs, I included onion, zucchini, and carrot, creating a delicious combination of flavors that perfectly complemented the meal.
When preparing for the trip, I thought no camping experience would be complete without indulging in s'mores for dessert. I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia with a marshmallow roasting over the fire. The gooey texture, melting chocolate, and crispy graham crackers combined to create a delectable treat that truly captured the essence of the day.
As the coals gradually dimmed and the night grew darker, I bid the fire goodnight, cherishing the warmth and comfort it provided. With a contented heart and a belly full of delicious food, I settled into my sleeping bag, appreciating the decision to solo camp in nature and marking my first foray into filming and editing a camping trip to share with other outdoor enthusiasts.
Thanks for making it this far and I hope you enjoy more of my videos to come!
